Parker Pen
SANDRETTO MACHINES MEET PARKER PEN'S HIGH PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Sandretto 60 tonne Series Eight AT machines figure in the first stages of a major moulding shop refurbishment at the Newhaven, Sussex factory of Parker Pen where a total of 19 machines - from 60 to 140 tonnes - are installed. Already, four 60 tonne Sandretto machines are now in production.

Introduction of the latest technology and much improved levels of automation had been the prime objects addressed by Manufacturing Engineer Ron Lees when, three years ago, he first began assessing which machines would be best suited to the unique demands placed on the Parker Pen in-house moulding department. The factory at Newhaven is set up for both high volume production with automatic assembly and low volume prestige lines.

The intricate and often very small mouldings which form the assembly of any Parker Pen product demand the finest of moulding tools. For the best and most consistent results, they need to work in advanced technology machines under precise, corrective control. A high cosmetic appearance must be produced and maintained on many parts; on all parts, maintenance of extremely close tolerances is essential for the degree of automated assembly.

In addition, to accommodate a wide variety of mould types and the use of purpose-built robots, injection machines have to be equipped with facilities for up to thirty different core pulling sequences. Ron Lees was also looking for extremely fast injection speeds and a quality/SPC software package which provided automatic fault correction and satisfied the company's demanding quality levels.

As a consequence of this extensive market research, Parker Pen was in a position to move quickly when investment was approved. Final judgment was to be made on tool trials and the after-sales service support. The latter was checked by asking questions around the trade. "We never heard a bad word against Sandretto service" state Ron. As for the tool trials, they were conducted to the satisfaction of Ron Lees and his production colleagues on machines at Sandretto's Rugby factory where, subsequently, a number of machine setters, and both maintenance electricians and fitters have already been trained.
